A routing protocol determines how a number of different routers communicate with each other using information which allows them to select specific routes between nodes on a computer network. Which route is chosen will depend on a series of routing algorithms. Each individual router only has prior data relating to networks that are directly attached to it. A routing protocol passes this information on, firstly to the nearest routers then throughout the whole network. This enables routers to increase information about the layout of the network.

Where are Protocols Used?

There are two classes of routing protocol, interior (IGP) and exterior (EGP). Generally you will be concerned with the protocols on the interior of your network simply because this I where the majority of the traffic is concentrated. Here is a breakdown of the two types of protocol:

  • Interior protocols: EIGRP, IS-IS, OSPF, RIP, EIGRP, and OSPF.
  • Exterior protocols: BGP.

How is Routing Calculated?

As well as their use classifications, routing protocols may also be classified by their method of calculating routing. The two classifications in this case are link-state protocols and distance-vector protocols.

  • Link-state protocols: IS-IS and OSPF. In this case the routing selection is based on a topology map of all the routers in a network group.
  • Distance-vector protocols: EIGRP, RIP, and BGP. In this case the routing selection is based on the distance of the target and the direct the data is to be sent.
